Diseases of Tortoises

If you have a tortoise, below are some of diseases that your pet may experience and how to overcome it.
Diarrhea:
Add alfalfa (rabbit pellets are compressed alfalfa) into their food for a while (because they have a protein that is too high as a regular food) and to replace foods that contain less water. Granting excessive fruit is a common cause of diarrhea. Use drugs only if the infection occurs, consult your veterinarian. If the diarrhea smells bad, report it immediately to your veterinarian as soon as possible. The dirt samples (fecal) should be examined to see if there are worms or flagellate organisms (such as worms).
Vomiting:
It is a very dangerous sign, consult with your veterinarian as soon as possible. It also could indicate the presence of worms in their bodies.
Abscess:
It is also quite common in tortoises, especially on the ears. Bring your tortoises to your vet if you notice swelling is not normal. Abscess can also be caused by a light bite or other injuries, such as the stabbing by a sharp object. Abscess on tortoises will not only give a response on antibiotic treatment. Abscess must be drained and all the waste and dead flesh must be removed through surgery, let it dry on the wound without stitches. Treatment after surgery is very important.
